Employee Retention - one simple approach which works!
Employee Retention - one simple approach which works!
At a recent Pineville / South Charlotte Chamber meeting, we discussed the business challenge of “employee retention”. Recruiting and retaining good team members is critical to your business’ livelihood, as well as your reputation in the marketplace. Frankly, it’s also pretty expensive.
One affordable way to help maintain strong teams is regular and visible celebrations. These don’t need to be expensive. But they must be sincere. And planned.
It’s not wrong to ask various folks, “what would help make you feel seen and appreciated?” You might be surprised that it’s not always money-related! Sometimes, recognition in front of their teammates goes a long way. Special Parking Spaces or a name on a visible “board”.
Many local organizations choose team building outings. Charlotte offers so many options! Hosting an off-site gathering is a memorable and long-lasting way of saying “thanks”. Consider expanding these gatherings to family members or “plus-ones”. This provides an opportunity for you to make impressions on your staff’s loved ones! And for them to see and speak with you.
When I meet with business leaders about group outings at the ballpark, many push back with the “cost” or “expense” of hosting an outing. Yet, we need to take into consideration the “cost” of employee morale and replacement. If this were a budgeted item or considered an investment in the employment process, it might change the thinking.
Yes – I am biased and feel that the best place to have an outing is at the Charlotte Knights ballpark. But consider other ideas and spaces! Get away from the office or warehouse! It’s ok to celebrate your team and thank them for their part in your success. If you’re unsure – start small. Maybe it’s an after-hours gathering outside with tents, music, BBQ, a cooler and cornhole. Get feedback. Build on this.
Employee retention and mental health is a significant part of your long-range business model. Move forward toward success by caring and recognizing your staff!
